Attempted check fraud has doubled in the last two years. It now reaches the incredible figure of $2.2 billion dollars annually. One of your institution's primary defenses against check fraud is its funds availability policy; i.e. the holds you place on deposited items.
This webinar focuses on Regulation CC, the federal regulation that controls your funds availability policy. It addresses fact situations that develop in the lobby of every financial institution every day. Difficult issues are addressed in plain language and supported by materials that serve as an excellent reference at the teller window and at the new accounts desk.
Regulation CC's requirements and prohibitions are complex and often misunderstood. However, like many consumer protection laws, they are primarily carried out by customer contact personnel. This program is aimed at the information contact personnel must understand and the practices they must follow. It can pay for itself the next day by avoiding a loss on a bad check or regulatory criticisms for illegal holds.
The program is presented at the entry level. It focuses on the distribution of required disclosures, calculation of hold periods and the completion of hold notices. Regulation CC is one of the few federal regulations incorporating a specific training requirement - the absence of a training effort can be cited as a separate violation.
Program content includes:
- How holds do, and do not, protect the institution
- Reviewing the initial disclosure
- Distinguishing between local and nonlocal checks
- Next day availability items
- Case by case holds
- Exception holds
- Timing and content of hold notices
